Project Little Soldier

Help the children of those deployed this holiday season. It's called "Soldier" but I think they help all branches. I got this from FNC so it is legit.

Project Valour-IT

And the final totals are in for Project Valour-IT.

TEAM ARMY $27,255
TEAM NAVY $12,327
TEAM AIR FORCE $9,224
TEAM MARINE $38,853
No Branch Specified $7,546
----------------
Total $95,205

Well, my call for the Marines to step it up seems to have worked but not so much for the Air Force. But these are some awesome totals and they will go a long way in helping.

Ho, Ho, Ho

Well, it's now only one month until Christmas. This year has gone by pretty fast. One of the side effects of getting older I guess. This was supposed to be my Christmas layout but Blogger isn't letting me upload the background or header images. Not sure why. I'll keep trying and hopefully it'll let me.

:UPDATE:
Score. It finally let me upload them. Now if only it would let me upload my favicon.

PFC Chance Phelps
PFC Chance Phelps
19 years old from Dubois, Wyoming
3 Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force
April 9, 2004
U.S. Marines

"I don't think anything can prepare you for two young men standing in the living room telling you your son’s been killed," said Gretchen Mack, mother of PFC Chance Phelps. "It's just surreal. They were crying." The last time she had talked her to son was a few days before his death. "He said, 'Mom, I'm fine.' He sounded great. It was really good to be able to talk to him. It made us feel better."

PFC Phelps was KIA while battling insurgents just outside of Baghdad, Iraq.

Friends recall Phelps as a fun-loving, hard-nosed kid. "He was big but didn't throw his size around to intimidate people", said Jarod Estey. "He was probably the toughest kid I knew growing up in grade school. He was probably the biggest kid, too — well-built and strong. But he was real easy going. He always had a smile on his face."

"He was very in tune politically," said his mother. "He knew what he wanted for this country. ... He told me after 9/11, 'I absolutely have to go. I've got to do something.'" But joining the military isn't anything new for the family. His father, John Phelps, is a Vietnam veteran. And his sister, Kelley, works at the Pentagon and is engaged to an Army sergeant.

"He had an unusual amount of zest," said his mother. "He just possessed this quality that he had to be in the thick of things all the time. He was very, very positive, very funny. ... His main thing in life was making people laugh."

SSgt. Salvatore Giunta
SSgt. Salvatore Giunta
25 years old from Ceder Rapid, Iowa
173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team
U.S. Army

Yesterday, SSgt. Salvatore Giunta became the first living recipient of the Medal Of Honor since the Vietnam War.

From the official citation:

Then-Specialist Salvatore A. Giunta distinguished himself by acts of gallantry at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a rifle team leader with Company B, 2d Battalion (Airborne), 503d Infantry Regiment during combat operations against an armed enemy in the Korengal Valley, Afghanistan on October 25, 2007. When an insurgent force ambush split Specialist Giunta’s squad into two groups, he exposed himself to enemy fire to pull a comrade back to cover. Later, while engaging the enemy and attempting to link up with the rest of his squad, Specialist Giunta noticed two insurgents carrying away a fellow soldier. He immediately engaged the enemy, killing one and wounding the other, and provided medical aid to his wounded comrade while the rest of his squad caught up and provided security. His courage and leadership while under extreme enemy fire were integral to his platoon’s ability to defeat an enemy ambush and recover a fellow American paratrooper from enemy hands.”

Holiday Mail For Heroes

Something very cool. They want to be able to send out 1,000,000 cards to active duty Men and Women, their families and veterans this year. If you would like to send a card head over to find out how. The deadline is December 10th.

Music Czar Monday

Perhaps their most danceable song. You can actually picture this being played in a German nightclub and a guy yelling "Dance Hans, dance". Plus the shotgun sound effect is pretty cool.

Veterans Day

Some have fought and bled for us while others never saw action. Yet they are all Heroes who deserve our deepest respect and thanks. They've done so much, yet ask for so little in return. Some who have come back were lucky and have been able to pick up their lives while others need our help. On this Veterans Day take time and remember these brave Men and Women who stood up and served this country and it's people.

To all the Men and Women who have worn the uniform of the United States military, Thank You.

Also, if you haven't done so yet, head over and add your message of thanks to their wall. And head over to Hulu to see stories of our Men and Women in uniform.

Lt. Wilson W. Brown
Lt. Wilson W. Brown
Company F, 21st Ohio Volunteer Infantry
Dec. 25, 1839 - Dec. 26, 1916

Private Wilson W. Brown was part of "The Great Locomotive Chase" or Andrews' Raid. It was a military raid that occurred April 12, 1862, in northern Georgia during the American Civil War. Volunteers from the Union Army commandeered a train and took it northwards toward Chattanooga, Tennessee, doing as much damage as possible to the vital Western & Atlantic Railroad (W&A) from Atlanta, Georgia to Chattanooga as they went, pursued by other locomotives. Because they had cut the telegraph wires, no warning could be sent to Confederate forces along their route. The raiders were eventually captured and some were executed as spies. Some of Andrews' Raiders became the first recipients of the Medal of Honor, including Pvt. Wilson Brown who was able to escape and later promoted to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. His citation read:

"One of the 19 of 22 men (including 2 civilians) who, by direction of Gen. Mitchell (or Buell), penetrated nearly 200 miles south into enemy territory and captured a railroad train at Big Shanty, Ga., in an attempt to destroy the bridges and track between Chattanooga and Atlanta".

Military Care Package

I've just about got my first care package I'm sending overseas done. It's not much. Like SRV sang, "Money's tight, nothing free... won't somebody come and rescue me, I am stranded.." Sorry. Got carried away there for a second. And so what with Christmas coming up things have to be budgeted but I was able to find a little something extra. I've some eye drops, lip balm, cotton swabs, a few bars of soap, 3 big bags of sunflower seeds and a huge bag of Lifesavers. I was tempted to keep those for myself but thought better of it. Forget to get sandwich bags so I'll be getting those later this week. And maybe a few other things. FYI, if you want to seed a care package, and have it there by Christmas, I think the deadline is next Saturday the 13th.

UPDATE
Ok, I've just been informed that the deadline for the area I'm shipping this package to is December 10 via priority mail. So that means I have more time than I thought to maybe get a few more things. Cool.

Military Stuff

Return The Favor
They're trying to raise $111,000 and 1,100 thank you notes for veterans by the end of the month. Check them out.

And lastly, don't forget the USMC's birthday next Wednesday. OORAH!

Music Czar Monday

If you're a fan of German Industrial Techno Metal then Ramms+ein is the band for you. If not, then hopefully I'll make you one by the end of the month. Ramms+ein is the band your parents threatened you over, or they took you to one of their show. I don't know your parents. But they're a crazy band. Not GWAR crazy, but crazy. October would have made more sense, Octoberfest and all, but November has five Mondays. Five Mondays = five songs. That's what's called using the old noggin And don't expect commentary from me as I don't speak German and therefor have no idea what they're talking about. They're just loud and heavy and that's really all we need to know. NOTE: I am not responsible for whatever happens to be in these videos. Just a warning. Also, there's one song that I just couldn't post. It's way too graphic. But look at their album Liebe Ist FĂĽr Alle Da and you'll see it. It's right there. It's a good song. Go to YouTube and check it out. WARNING: The only one they're allowed to show is the censored version but it's still Adult. If you want the uncensored version you can search for it, but, like the song, it's pornographic. Still amazed that I got this album at Wal-Mart.
