HAPPY COLUMBUS DAY?
All through out our days a school we were told that Christopher Columbus was a hero. That he bravely sailed the Atlantic and found the new land. Just a few things about that.

1) The moron got lost trying to find India
2) He "discovered" a new land where
A. Millions of people were already living
B. Had been visited by the Vikings a few hundreds years before

3) He and brought new diseases to the land that killed countless Indians
4) The idiot saddled us with a name that would cause confusion in the years to come
5) He proceeded to enslave the people thus becoming the first White slave trader in the region and starting a 500+ year long hell

Yeah, I don't think I'm going to be celebrating his "accomplishment".
We Have Every Right To Dream Heroic Dreams.
Those Who Say That We're In A Time When There Are No Heroes, They Just Don't Know Where To Look.

hehehe - here're the points against Columbus as I formulated them back when I was going to write that essay:

a) He believed the world was round without any evidence, but a lot of people were saying it. This suggests gullability, rather than his normally characterised "freethinking" nature.

b) He declared the first landmass he stepped onto to be India, despite the following problems:
1)Japan and China would have been in the way of his arrival in India (which should have been a known fact - given that India was a trade nexus because of its position between the East and West).
2) There were no discernable trade goods at his place of arrival.
3)There was a severe lack of horses, camels or elephants (all of which would have been well-known creatures of India.
4) There weren't any Hindu speakers (but that would have escaped his attention since he didn't speak Hindu), but nobody there spoke Portuguese, which should have been a good giveaway.
5) There was a distinct lack of Europeans.
6) There's a significant difference between "people running around in what the Europeans would consider their underwear and slippers waving hatchets" and "a highly sophisticated and structured society where everyone only takes on a single role in society according to their caste".

I guess all heathens look the same to idiot Spaniards.

Why do you think I called the slave-trading jackass a moron?

Because he was exactly that. :)
