Border Plan

Recently, in the opinion section of my local paper, someone wrote the editor with his plan on what should be done with the border. Maybe someone should alert President Bush to this post for his speech tomorrow night.

1. Prosecute and/or penalize businesses that hire illegal immigrants. No exceptions

2. Amend Constitution. No automatic U.S. citizenship when foreign-born nationals, legal or illegal, give birth on U.S. soil. (That one's actually wrong. The Fourteenth Amendment was written with newly freed slaves in mind. Not just anyone born on U.S. soil. Sen. Jacob Howard, the man who introduced the provisions of the 14th Amendment, said the following
This amendment which I have offered is simply declaratory of what I regard as the law of the land already, that every person born within the limits of the United States, and subject to their jurisdiction, is by virtue of natural law and national law a citizen of the United States. This will not, of course, include persons born in the United States who are foreigners, aliens, who belong to the families of ambassadors or foreign ministers accredited to the Government of the United States, but will include every other class of persons.)

3. Create a 90-day window for illegal immigrants to register and apply for proper documentation.

4. Illegal aliens with forged or fake documents must be prosecuted, fined, garnisheed and sent home to re-enter legally. ( I disagree with the last part of this one. They should never be allowed back into the country once deported)

5. Forget the wall. Hire more border control people and give them tools. (Again, I disagree. I say do both)

6. Legalize or empower the Minute Men with authority similar to Civil Air Patrol, police auxiliary, etc.

7. Empower fast-track citizenship for legal immigrants as incentive.

8. No legal papers? No benefits! Exception: only for life-saving measures and transportation to country of origin.

Even though his third and fourth ideas kind cancel each other out, it's a pretty good plan.
