Up Yours

Reader John K sent this story to me. I would have posted it yesterday as my Wednesday Hero but I had already made the post when I read this story.

The man in the picture is USMC Gunny Sergeant "Iron Mike" Burghardt after a failed attempt by terrorist in Iraq to kill him. Here's the story.

24 February 2006: The U.S.M.C. gunnery sergeant in the picture is Michael Burghardt, part of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team that is supporting 2nd Brigade 28th Infantry Division (Pennsylvania Army National Guard). On his third tour in Iraq, "Iron Mike" become a legend in the bomb disposal world after being awarded the Bronze Star for disabling 64 IEDs and destroying 1,548 pieces of ordnance during his second tour. On September 19, 2005, "Iron Mike" was seriously wounded in a dramatic rescue of U.S. soldiers wounded from a bomb blast.

A media ally in the war on terrorism, Pat Campbell, radio talk show host at 540 WFLA AM in Orlando, Florida interviewed "Iron Mike" Burghardt from Iraq this morning. His story is amazing and the interview is riveting.

Excerpted:

"Iron Mike" arrived at a chaotic scene after a bomb had killed four US soldiers. He chose not to wear the bulky bomb protection suit. "You can't react to any sniper fire and you get tunnel-vision," he explains. So, protected by just a helmet and standard-issue flak jacket, he began what bomb disposal officers term "the longest walk", stepping gingerly into a 5ft deep and 8ft wide crater. The earth shifted slightly and he saw a Senao base station with a wire leading from it. He cut the wire and used his knife to probe the ground. "I found a piece of red detonating cord between my legs," he says. "That's when I knew I was screwed."

Realizing he had been sucked into a trap, Sgt Burghardt, 35, yelled at everyone to stay back. At that moment, an insurgent, probably watching through binoculars, pressed a button on his mobile phone to detonate the secondary device below the sergeant's feet. "A chill went up the back of my neck and then the bomb exploded," he recalls. "As I was in the air I remember thinking, 'I don't believe they got me.' I was just ticked off they were able to do it. Then I was lying on the road, not able to feel anything from the waist down."

Katrina Video 2

You can read this yourselves. Just a quick question. If the governor didn't know what was going on in her own state, how was Bush supposed to know?

Round 2

Now The Great State of Mississippi is thinking about banning abortions.
" Republican Gov. Haley Barbour said Wednesday that he likely would sign a bill to ban most abortions in Mississippi if it's approved by lawmakers"
Looks like Democrats worst fear is on the cusp of happening. And don't expect me to feel bad about it either. We here in Oklahoma have a Democrat as governor. Hopefully we can get Henry out of office and get a Republican back in and maybe be one of the states to challenge Roe vs. Wade.

Who's a better president?

A) George W. Bush
B) Bill Clinton

Kind of a slanted question wouldn't you say? Considering who my readers are chances are that Bush will come out on top by a wide margin. Well, it's kind of like CBS's poll on W's job approval. According to their poll, Bush's job approval is down to 34%. But there seems to be something wrong with the poll. It appears that CBS questioned quite a few more Democrats than Republicans. 137 more to be exact. 409-272. Here's a PDF(70K) of the poll. It also has quite a few more questions that were asked and got the same skewed response. Now, when you ask more people who already hate someone of course you're going to get this type of outcome. But it's CBS. We shouldn't really expect more.

He Does It Again

Once again Anthony has written a great post. This time on what happened with Katrina. Honest to God, he's becoming one of the best out there. I could actually see him one day right up there with the heavyweights. Powerline, Malkin, Barber.

Now my take. First off, I have to admit that I haven't seen the tape so I have no idea what's in it. But please don't for a second think this is something new. Officials have been warned for years that the levees in New Orleans wouldn't hold. They knew this day would come and no one did a damn thing about it. Not local government or federal. The citizens of New Orleans themselves could have done more to insure that this wouldn't happen. They could have protested to anyone and demand that the levee system be updated. They could have went to the media years ago about this. But nobody did anything about it. I honestly can't say why. Apathy? Maybe, but I doubt it. I think it was more complacency. Like Anthony said
"The simple fact 1300 people died is that it was a monster hurricane that people ignored because they felt, 'hey, it's not that serious it's just another hurricane...I've survived them before and I'll survive this one.'"
People knew what was coming. They'd been warned to leave. Some couldn't, I get that, but many could. But complacency stopped them. Same goes for government officials. They knew that this storm was coming, and even though they sent out the warnings they didn't nothing in the years before to prevent the levees from being breached. Why? This one I can't answer. I just don't know, but unlike the Left I don't believe it was because nobody cared. Should we be talking about this today? No. Because this should have never happened. There was a massive failure, but again, unlike the Left, I don't put all the blame of the federal government. There's plenty of it to be handed out to everyone.

Wednesday Hero

Lance Cpl. Andrew J. Zabierek
United States Marines
26 years old from Chelmsford, Massachusetts
2nd Battalion, 2nd Marines, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force
May 21, 2004

Zabierek, who arrived in Iraq in March, was patrolling the Al Anbar province of the country when he was struck by a vehicle, possibly driven by an Iraqi resident, U.S. Congressman Marty Meehan told The Sun of Lowell, Mass.

His father, Stephen Zabierek, told the newspaper he expected to learn more details on Tuesday.

Zabierek, a Clemson University graduate, worked for American Express Financial Advisors in Waltham before volunteering for military service after the Sept. 11 attacks, which affected him deeply, his father said.

"Andrew could have been an officer, but he chose to start out as an enlisted soldier," he said. "His point was, how do you lead a grunt if you don'’t know what a grunt goes through every day?"

Stephen Zabierek said his son had a difficult life in the Middle East, but he enjoyed talking to Iraqi children and said they would flock around him and ask questions about America and his family.

Andrew ZabierekÂ’s grandfather was a World War II bombardier and his father served four years in the Navy in the early 1970s. His younger brother, Mark Zabierek, is a second lieutenant and intelligence officer in the Air Force.

Andrew Zabierek, of Chelmsford, Mass., was almost halfway through his four-year commitment to the Marines, The Sun reported.

"I am deeply saddened by the loss of Andrew. He was a brave young man," Meehan said. "Andrew answered his call to duty and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom of the United States, Iraq, and the world. We owe him all a debt of gratitude."

These brave men and women have given their lives so that others may enjoy the freedoms we get to enjoy everyday. For that, I am proud to call them Hero.

If you have a loved who has served or is currently serving in the armed forces, and would like for me to profile them as a Wednesday Hero, I would be proud to. Just email me with some info and a photo.

Thank You
This post is dedicated to the men and woman who have served and are serving in the United States military. I've never been in the armed forces, so I don't even pretend to know everything you go through or the sacrifices you have made or are making. But my father was in the Army during the Korean War so I have tremendous respect for you and what you do for us. I just wanted to let you know that you have people back home who love, support and respect you and who wish you a safe and speedy return. You sacrifice everything in your lives for people you don't even know. You may not call yourselves heroes, but that's what you are.
Thank You
The first of every month, I post this message. It would be nice to see people honor and thank the men and woman who keep us safe. So if you would like to take part in this, just save the image above to your server and re-post this post. If you're not able to upload images, Photobucket or Tinypic are two great free host sites. What's great about this is that anyone can participate. There's no political leanings here. Show your support for the men and woman who defend our freedoms.
