As we all know, a tragic event tends to bring out the best and the worst in people. And hurricane Katrina is no exception. We've seen the inherent good in people with the $600 million coming in from us average Joe Americans donating that $5 or $10 we may have laying around. People from around the country opening their homes and inviting complete strangers who have lost theirs to live with them. Companies around the countries extending their hands and offering jobs to people who no longer have one because it's under water. Banks giving their depositors $1,000, no strings attached, a loss to the bank themselves mind you. Churches around the country opening their doors for people who have no where to go.
But, sadly, we also see the worse of the human species at times like this. People like Kanye West, Al Sharpton and Howard Dean spewing forth their racist hate speech about Bush not caring about Blacks. The murders, rapes, theft and shootings that took place right after the hurricane hit. Florida Homeowners Associations refusing to allow their residents to bring in victims to live with them. And soon we'll be hearing about the low lifes who are trying to capitalize on the victims. The "handymen" who will "fix" your home for thousands less than an actual contractor for instance. And we'll also be hearing from some of the more extreme that the victims had this coming for one reason or other, that God is punishing them.
You know, when I make a post I tend to think ahead of time about what I'm going to say. You know, work it out. Bet you never could tell. But with this one, it just kind of came as I went. So I really don't have a way of ending it with some kind of snappy line or heart warming sentiment of my own. So, I thought I would end it with a poem I found because I like to think that in the end the good nature in humans will win out over the ignorance of the bad.
"We touch the sky Reaching for the heavens the Earth is golden below us One frozen moment together we leap We fly with the mythical swans of ambition, creativity and love The Earth spins in space Space is vast and beckoning Vast is the human spirit Free as the open mind So many lives So many dreams Conscious and unconscious The human spirit has no limits We touch the sky" |
