This Weeks Soldier Was Suggested By Kathy

Ahmed Qusai al-Taayie
41 years old from Ann-Arbor, Michigan


Specialist Ahmed Qusai al-Taayie is a Iraqi American U.S. Army linguist soldier, from Ann-Arbor, Michigan who was kidnapped on October 23, 2006 in Baghdad and has not been seen since.

al-Taayie joined the Army in 2004 to help not only his country, the United States, but also his birthplace of Iraq and was deployed in 2005. On October 23, 2006 he was visiting his wife in the Karrada Shiite neighborhood in central Baghdad when he and his cousin were kidnapped by a group calling themselves Ahel al-Beit Brigades. His cousin was released shortly after. On November 2, 2006 al-Taayie's uncle received a ransom demand of $250,000 for his return. Along with the ransom came a grainy video that showed a man beaten up who was identified as al-Taayie. No more has been heard.

Failed Policy

We hear day in and day out about President Bush's failed Iraq policy. It was wrong, it was carried out wrong, we should get out now. Funny thing is, the people who keep going with this rhetoric are the same one's who continue to turn a blind eye to the U.N.'s failed Darfur policy.

Now in its fourth year, the conflict has become the world's worst humanitarian crisis, and rape is its regular byproduct, U.N. and other human rights activists say.

Four years? Around about the same time we went into Iraq. Huh.

Pfc. Jeffries was killed with two fellow soldiers, Capt. Daniel W. Eggers and Sgt. 1st Class Robert J. Mogensen, and an unnamed sailor, when their vehicle drove over an IED in Kandahar, Afghanistan. All four service members were attached to the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force – Afghanistan. He is survived by his wife, Betsy, and his parents Mark and Linda Jeffries.

Ignoring Iran

CNN aired a repeat of Glenn Beck over the weekend in which he had a great "Real Story" segment. Below is the text of that.

First, welcome to "The Real Story." I want to remind you just a few of the stories that have made big headlines in the media over the last few months. We had the Virginia Tech shootings, we had Imus getting fired, Paris sentenced to prison, Anna Nicole`s baby needed after, Britney shaved her head, went into rehab, then got back out of rehab. Rosie O`Donnell said a bunch of insane things, then quit. David Hasselhoff got hammered and made a video. Alec Baldwin went off on his daughter. Miss USA partied too much. An astronaut went crazy, and Sanjaya was voted off "American Idol."

You know why everybody has spent so many hours infatuated with these stupid stories? It`s because they`re all about celebrities or violence or public embarrassment. And with a few exceptions, the stories themselves weren`t all that important. But what was important is that we kept watching like stupid zombies that we are.

We watch the news because they fed our hunger for entertainment. They played right into the narcissism that we talked about yesterday, the narcissism that is America, unfortunately, today.

Now, I hate to play Mr. Gloomy, you know, and I know I`m not going to set any ratings records for it. But the real story is, while we`re watching all this crap, our enemies aren`t going away. They`re not watching it. They`re not going away, just because we get distracted by the stories like the D.C. madam, which, by the way, was kind of a letdown, wasn`t it? Don`t you think ABC is kicking themselves, going, "What the hell happened to that story?"

Almost two months have passed since the U.N. passed any approved sanctions against Iran. And guess what? They haven`t stopped enriching uranium just because we stopped paying attention. In fact, surprise, the IAEA made a surprise inspection last Sunday and proved that they`re enriching more uranium than ever before.

According to inspectors, about 1,300 centrifuges were actively producing fuel during the inspector, another 600 in some stage of construction and, most frightening of all, a diplomat claims that a total of 8,000 centrifuges could be in place by the end of this year.

Let me put that into perspective, you know, for those of us that don`t have a do-it-yourself centrifuge kit: 3,000 centrifuges operating for one year could make enough nuclear material for you to make a bomb. You do the math on 8,000 of them. Good news is, the current uranium is only enriched to about 5 percent and weapons-grade uranium needs to be enriched about 90 percent. Bad news? Experts say Iran could do that in as little as four months, but there is one small problem.

I`ve been telling you about this for months. You know, we`ve been distracted by Paris Hilton. They have to evict the U.N. inspectors first. That`s the tipping point I told you to watch for. Once that happens, there is no doubt as to Iran`s true intentions and no doubt of what we or Israel will be forced to do to stop them. That is not good news.

The only question is whether we`ll all be too distracted by Lindsay Lohan`s next drinking binge to even notice.

A homicide bomber walked into a crowded market in Afghanistan and blew himself up killing 14 and wounding 31. It appears that a U.S. convoy was the intended target....?

Wait, I though the U.S. had abandoned Afghanistan. At least according to the media and Democrats in Congress. Huh.

Amnesty

This is a fucked up situation this country is in and there's no real clear way out of it. How our government, past and present, has allowed this to happen is beyond me. And reading this Reuters story makes me sick. They make these criminals out to be heroes of some sort. What this bill does is tell the people who've worked hard to come to America legally "screw you, suckers". The amnesty infuriates me, but it's not like you can round up 20 million people when you don't even know who or where they are. And anyone who thinks you can is delusional.

They're going in reverse. First you tighten every access point into the country, make it a crime to hire illegals THEN you try to figure out what to do with those already here. What happened to the days when government actually cared about this country and it's people?

The DNC has announced it's debates. Two will be held on CNN and NBC and one will be held on ABC and CBS. Not one on FNC. You'd think that they'd want to go to the #1 cable news channel in the country. And according to Wikipedia, the GOP debates will be two on CNN, one on ABC, PBS, FNC and Iowa Public Television. Wow, Republican debates on MSNBC, CNN, PBS and ABC. Not very friendly places. I guess Republicans are trying to reach as many people as they can while Democrats want to preach to the choir.

Tears ran down cheeks and strong men choked back emotion as the city of Hondo, NM payed tribute to fallen Marine, Steven Chavez. LCpl. Chavez lost his life on March 14, 2007 in a non-combat incident in which he was accidentally shot.

Chavez enlisted in the Marine Cops. right after he graduated in 2005. "You pray and you pray that the day never comes, and then it does," said Novelda Chavez, Chavez's mother. "Your emotions are mixed — it’s not true, it’s a bad dream, a bad dream you never wake up from."

In a letter Chavez wrote before he was sent to Iraq, he wrote:
"First of all I would like to thank everyone for your support. When I'm home on leave and when I'm away. That is so important to me. Thank you for your kind, supporting words in your letters and for the packages I've received. Those are awesome.

I've been through some pretty hard times, in the short time I've been in the Marine Corp. None harder then what I'm about to face. Yes I'm scared; nothing is scarier than the uncertainty of what your future holds for you. I'm prepared to face whatever lies ahead.

I put my life in the hands of the Lord. And pray that He guides my fellow soldiers and I down a safe path, that He will calm our fears, and give us the strength to do the job we have been trained to do, and to do that job well.

There are many lonely nights, when you're lying in your bunk thinking of family and friends, wondering what they are doing at that very moment. Wondering what mom is cooking for supper. I can almost taste the tortillas on the griddle.

I want to say to all of you tonight, I wouldn't change one thing about my life.

I've never been more proud of the choices I made in my life than the day I graduated from basic drill instructor placed that Anchor, Globe and Eagle Pin in my hand I knew then I was a UNITED STATES MARINE!

GOP Debate

Just a few notes on tonight's GOP debate.

I liked all the candidates. They were all pretty clear and well spoken. Even Ron Paul, at first. Then he goes and shots himself in the foot with his views on 9/11. If his candidacy isn't over after tonight, I'll be shocked.

Is Mitt Romney the John Kerry of the GOP? Perhaps. And I don't think he shined all that much. Too bland.

I still don't agree with McCain on interrogation.

I originally said that I agreed with McCain on the war 100%. That was a mistake. I agree with some aspects of his views, but it was either Hunter or Huckabee, can't remember which one, that I agreed with more. I'll have to wait until I can find a transcript to know which one it was.

Rudy got the biggest applause of the night. In a very Conservative state, no less.

I think McCain came off pretty good.

And I think Mike Huckabee really raised his status in this race.

I thought both Romney and Giuliani explained their views on abortion quite well. Abortions down and adoptions up in NYC while Rudy was Mayor.

Tommy Thompson looked like a deer in the headlights. He looked almost scared. Absolutely no personality. Is he the Al Gore of the GOP?

I thought Chris Wallace, Wendell Goler and Brit Hume asked fair, but tough questions. None of that "What Do You Hate About America" crap.

Mike Huckabee's Edwards joke was the soundbite of the night. "Spending like John Edwards at a beauty parlor". Priceless.

I think John McCain started out winning but Rudy slowly started to take over. And I think it began with his explanation of his views on abortion. He seemed to turn the tide after that.

However, I don't think he, Giuliani, explained his past views on immigration too well. He kind of danced around the question.

Back to Ron Paul. He seems a little short sighted on foreign policy. If we don't get involved, we'll be okay. That's the view we had before W.W.II

Can't remember who it was, Duncan Hunter I think, had some great views on global warming. He wasn't sure if man was the cause, but if we are he laid out what needs to be done.

Winners: Rudy Giuliani and Mike Huckabee
Losers: Ron Paul and Tommy Thompson

Not a bad pre-primary debate. Will it change anyone's minds? Maybe for a few candidates.

I mean really, what does a candidate having pre-marital sex have to do with running for president? I would say that questions to GOP candidates will only going to get worse, but you don't get much worse than "What do you hate about America?".

A Soldier Needs Our Help

I received the following email from a WHB member.

I don't often do this, but I need some help getting the word out about a local soldier who is in need. Chris Cooper Jr is currently stationed in Iraq. His father passed away from cancer last month, and the combination of loss of income, medical bills and funeral expenses has practically wiped the family's finances out. Cooper has had to take out a loan against his military pay to help pay for the funeral and other bills.

Oklahoma & Illegal Immigration

Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry(D) has passed what is considered the most comprehensive immigration bill in the country. Under the new law, local law enforcement will be able to enforce federal immigration laws, employers who hire illegals will pay and they will not be able to fire a legal citizen for an illegal who will do the same job for less money. Honestly, I'm surprised that Henry signed it. I thought he'd wuss out and give into the pressure. Now, if only Bush and Congress would do the same.

Louise Vandertulip fussed at her son about his spending. He bought wild, overpriced hats that had flames on them or horns coming out of the top, she said.

While in Army basic training, he bought portraits of himself. His mother told him to save his money.

She's glad he didn't listen.

The hats and the pictures are all a part of her memories now.

Spc. Josiah H. Vandertulip was killed in Baghdad when his patrol came under small arms fire.

Josiah Vandertulip joined the Army right after his graduation from Irving High School in 2002. He spent a year in South Korea before being stationed at Texas' Fort Hood in February. Against his mother's advice, he volunteered to go to Iraq. She told him to wait, to go to college.

"When he was determined to do something in his heart, he would do it and hell or high water couldn't keep him from it," she said

By going, he knew someone else with a young family could be saved from serving, relatives said.

He always had the important things right, Louise Vandertulip said.

"There's a lot of rest in knowing that he died doing what he believed in and doing what he thought was right," she said.

"We have a much more real sense of the cost for the freedom that we enjoy now," said his father, Robert Vandertulip.

"Josiah was the first brand new soldiers I recieved as a dismounted team leader in Korea. He was one of the Best soldiers I have had the honor to train and work with. He loved being a soldier as much as any guy I have met. He was a great leader in the absence of his superiors. I could always count on him to make sure the mission was accomplished. I watched him change over the year I had him from a goofy kid, to a hard charging soldier."

Waterlogged

If you've been paying attention to the news, or live here, you know that the Midwest has been slammed with storms for about a week or so. 90+ tornadoes in the last week. Greensburg, Kansas obliterated. It's been bad. Here in my neck of the woods we've only gotten rain. A Lot Of It. 5+ inches in some areas. Going to my dentist appointment yesterday morning I crossed over a creek that runs near my abode. It was almost over the road. Some roads were overrun with water. And we're to get more rain today, tomorrow, Thursday and Friday. We've been in a drought the past three or so years. I think we've busted it.

The GOP Debate

And Democrats were worried about doing a debate sponsored by FNC? I'm glad the Republican candidates didn't throw hissy fits and refuse the MSNBC debate. I mean, What Do You Hate About America? What the fuck kind of question is that? They would have been better off going to a more friendly place like FNC, but they were big enough to go to MSNBC, a network that hates them, and take Chris Matthews' ignorance for 90 minutes. I commend them for that.

Did anybody else watch this last night? I thought it was pretty good. Finally something that talks about the other side of the debate. And yes, despite what some think, there is a valid "other side" and the debate is not over. Ms. Crow.

I'm not going go into detail. You can read the transcript or watch the repeat of it, but there is one thing I wanted to spotlight. The interview with Martin Eberhard. The man who invented the Telsa. An electric car that I wouldn't mind owning.

Part of what`s gone wrong with so many electric cars that came on before is that they're built by people who thought of driving as a necessary evil and that Americans' driving habits are bad and we`re bad people and we shouldn't do that, and if we would just become better people, why, we can be perfectly happy with this glorified golf cart.

Bingo. You can't force change on Americans. When pushed, we tend to push back. We have to want to change. The Prius doesn't make me want to change. It's an ass-ugly car. Lay of the screaming and badgering and give something we like.

Hospitalman Luis E. Fonseca Jr.


On August 11, 2004, Naval Hospitalman Luis E. Fonseca, Jr. was awarded the Navy's second highest decoration. The Navy Cross, which is awarded for extraordinary heroism while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States and must be performed in the presence of great danger or at great personal risk, was awarded for his actions while serving with Amphibious Assault Vehicle Platoon, Company C, 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines, Task Force Tarawa, II Marine Expeditionary Force.

On March 23, 2004, Fonseca, Jr.'s unit were trying to take the Saddam Canal Bridge. Five Marines were injured when their vehicle was hit by an RPG. Fonseca, while still being fired upon by machine guns and RPG's, pulled the Marines to safety and established a casualty collection unit inside his own medical evacuation vehicle. After his vehicle was hit once again, Fonseca organized litter teams and directed the movement of four of the Marines, while personally carrying one wounded Marine over open ground to another vehicle. On November 15, 2004, Seaman Fonseca was awarded the "Grateful Nation Award" from the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs for his actions.

"I was doing my job," said Fonseca. "I wish I could have done more."
