Get Your Priorities Straight

President Obama has the time to fly to Denmark to personally bid for the 2016 Olympics, but he doesn't have the time to talk with Gen. Stanley McChrystal? Does he even care about trying to win this war?

I think it would be the first time the US president take a direct role in the games....

I don’t think this is an indication that the President doesn’t have time to talk to General McChrystal or that he doesn’t care about winning the war. In the military the chain of command is very important and there are several people between General McChrystal and the Commander in Chief. The President speaking directly to deployed commanders about ongoing operations is the exception not the rule. How about giving him credit for ordering an additional 17,000 more troops into Afghanistan (a nearly 50 percent increase of the 36,000 U.S. soldiers there at the time) within a month of taking office? He did this to stabilize a deteriorating situation that was due to a lack of attention and resources by the previous administration.

Where was your outrage then, Chris?

Ok, I'm feeling too hot so I'm going to try and type as little as possible.

While I'm not a McCain fan, I'm going with what he said on this. "Every president I know has talked directly to the generals. Of course you observe the chain of command, but General McChrystal has direct responsibility for 60,000 young Americans." Gen. McChrystal has said they need more help or they may lose Afghanistan. And that's what Obama has to stop and think about? He has to personally try to get the Olympics in Chicago. He as to get his stimulus and health care bills passed NOW or we're in trouble, but commanders on the ground asking for more help. That needs some thinking about?

And yes, I'm late to the table in criticizing Bush for not doing more in Afghanistan, but I can't change the pass. That was a HUGE mistake on his part. Now, I'm going to go lay down and hope that I'm not getting sick :)

The President has spoken with General McChrystal, just not enough to suite you. And as someone in the military community I can tell you the issue isn’t whether commanders will get the help on the ground they are asking for. The issue is how many and when. It took President Bush four years to put in place the leadership and finally commit the resources we needed in Iraq to turn the situation around. In contrast, within months of taking office President Obama committed 17,000 more troops to Afghanistan and replaced the commander who wasn’t getting the job done with one who helped catch Saddam Hussein and kill Zarqawi.

I hope you’re feeling better soon, Chris.

He's spoken to him once, and he's finally getting ready to speak to him for a second time. So, no, it's not enough for me. The president should be speaking with the commanders on the ground a lot more to know what's going on and what they need. The quickest way to the truth is not through channels but directly from the source. If the situation is getting worse, and we're in danger of loosing the country what's there to think about when the man you put in charge of the mission is asking for more help? I just think there are more important things for the president to concern himself with than the Olympics.

And I'm feeling better. I think it was either my allergies trying to make a final stand or it may have been some bad chicken I ate. Not sure.

Yes, informally you may speak with your commanders from time to time but when it comes to the needs of the mission you communicate through the chain of command…period. Otherwise everyone is on a different sheet of music (the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Chiefs, etc.). So the number of times he’s spoken to McChrystal directly is irrelevant.

Again, it’s not a question of if – it’s a question of how many and when. Frankly, President Obama has done more for Afghanistan in the eight months he’s been in office than President Bush ever did. But I guess that doesn’t count.

Glad you’re feeling better.
