Star Trek In Todays World II

Now, just bare with me here. I'm going to talk about Trek a bit but it applies to the world we live in today. I've been watching my favorite Trek series, Enterprise, and I'm on season 4. More specifically the Vulcan storyline. In it the Vulcan's have lost their way over the years from the teachings of Surak. His original writing have been lost for centuries and all that remain are what's been passed down, and those are open to interpretation. They've been corrupted by the High Command, their government. It's kind of like what's going on in the country today. Our government, and it's citizens, have lost their way from what our founders intended this country to be. We have their writings but they're not followed and some are being interpreted incorrectly. In the storyline they find Surok's original writings and they change their entire culture back to the way it was intended. One of the episodes is called "Awakening". This country's going through it's own awakening with people finally realizing that our government is corrupt and things need to change before we destroy ourselves.

If you have Netflix check out the disks of season 4 with the episodes "The Forge", "Awakening" & "Kir'Shara" and see how closely they match with what's going on today.

Star Trek In Todays World

I wrote this post back in 2008 talking about some of the things in our lives that have been influence by Star Trek. I've been watching Enterprise the past week or so and I noticed something else we have today that seems to have been influenced by Trek. Take a look at the PADDS they use. Do they remind you of the Kindle or iPad maybe?

Star Trek

I finally got to watch Star Trek last night. A movie that I had been waiting to see for almost two years. And I'll say it right off the bat, J.J. Abrams nailed it. He got it right. It was the best ST movie since ST IV: Save The Whales, I mean The Voyage Home. It looked so real. Like that's how the future could actually look. The massive scale of everything. Nero's ship, the Enterprise engine room, Big Red on Delta Vega. Even the bridge of the Enterprise with it's complete opposite look from the original. The first scene on the bridge, and I didn't even notice it. It looked like it just was supposed to look like that. Like that's how it always looked. The new look of the Phasers and transport effect. I don't even know how to describe how cool they were. The casting was superb. Eric Bana's Nero was the 2nd best Trek villain of all time. Khan being first, obviously. Chris Pine was the best choice to play Kirk. Brash, cocky, arrogant, strong, gung-ho. Zachary Quinto's Spock worked so well. Though, he should have lowered his voice a little. It was a little too high for me. But Karl Urban was the best. He was "Bones". There were a few times when I swore it was Deforest Kelly it was so good. Especially the first scene of him and Kirk on the shuttle.

Now for the elephant in the room. WARNING: Spoiler Alert. Highlight To Read. They didn't fix the time line. WTF? After everything that happened in this movie it's like the events of TOS, TNG, DS9 & VOY never happened. Can we really call this movie part of ST canon? Vulcan is destroyed making the Vulcan's an endangered species, Kirk's dad dies and Cpt. Pine is fine. Although what happened to him could have happened at a later date. Maybe they'll fix it in the sequel, I don't know. Other things I have a gripe about. Enterprise had already established that cars didn't exist in the future, yet Kirk's dad had one and Kirk himself had a motorcycle. Spock and Uhura had, what appeared to be, a sexual relationship? I can't swallow that one. Sorry. Spoiler Alert Over. And there weren't enough extras on the 2 disk DVD set. Damn Blu-Ray got all of them. But all in all, it was a great movie. If you've never watched Trek, you can come into this movie and enjoy it. It's a great action movie that just happens to be set in the Trek universe. The only way it could have been better was if I had an HDTV and surround sound.

Happy Trek Day

Star Trek premieres today. I don't think I've looked forward to a movie more than this one. Almost two years since this movie was announced. I was against it at first. I mean, Star Trek: TOS is an institution around the world. Shatner is Kirk. Nemoy is Spock. Kelly is McCoy. And I felt they shouldn't do this. But then I saw the first trailer with the Enterprise being build and Nemoy's voice over with the classic "Space, The Final Frontier", and now I'm drooling over this movie. Even if the time travel plot is a cheap ploy to change things the way Abrams wants. I won't go into geek mode and complain about Spock and Uhura's "relationship" or Kirk driving a car and motorcycle even though such things didn't exist in the Trek universe anymore or Chekov being on the bridge at the start or Sulu going from Japanese to Korean. Although, there is something to be said about seeing Uhura in her underwear. Can't complain too much about that. Some purists won't like it because Trek never really need sex like that to sell, but like Nemoy said, fans need to open their minds and enjoy this movie for the movie. And that's what I'm going to try and do.

Star Trek Movie News 18

For those of you who've been waiting for this movie, the wait just got a little harder. Along with the first teaser trailer coming out on Friday with the new Bond movie, Paramount has released the first image of the new Enterprise.

I like this thing. It looks like a cross between the Enterprise-A and Enterprise-D.

Trek Movie News 18

Been a while since there's been any news worth talking about. TrekMovie.com has four posters up that will be available at Comic Con next week that feature Kirk, Spock, Uhura and the villain in the movie, Nero. When all four posters are put together you get the following image.Zachary Quinto could be Leonard Nemoy's son he looks so much like him. There's just one thing he should do. Squint more. If you look a pictures of Nimoy as Spock, his eyes aren't as wide as Quinto's. You can go here to see larger images of the posters.

A Very Trek Christmas

I have found my official Christmas gift. How freakin' cool is this? But I'll need two of them. One to keep in the package and one to play with.

The World Is Looking More Like Star Trek Every Day

This post gets a little geeky, so bear with me. In the show Star Trek: Voyager they had what they called "Nanoprobes". And now scientists at UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara and MIT have come up with the "nanoworm". But this isn't the first thing in our lives that's been influenced by Star Trek. The cell phone you can't live without? Based the the communicator. Remember the ear piece that Lt. Uhura wore? Bluetooth headset. Star Trek had music stored digitally years before the advent of the MP3. When you walk into the grocery store and the door magically opens on it's own. First seen in Star Trek. And scientists today are actually working on holodeck and transporter technology.

And while on the subject of the real world meets Trek, the Trek universe had what Gene Roddenberry called "The Eugenics Wars".

The Eugenics Wars (or the Great Wars) were a series of conflicts fought on Earth in the mid-1990s. The result of a scientific attempt to improve the Human race through selective breeding and genetic engineering

Now, why bring this up? Because of stories like this. Now, obviously it's far fetched. We're decades away from being able to do what Hitler wanted to do and create the perfect human, but it is a slippery slope and if we're not careful that imaginary Eugenics War may not be just science fiction one day. Read the last sentence on the page. What happens when it becomes safe?

The official trailer. Sends chills up my spine every time I see it. All it is is the Enterprise under construction, but it's still awesome. When Nimoy comes one a says "Space, the final frontier" and the USS Enterprise comes into view on the saucer section and the music hits, *shivers*. This shows the Enterprise in a scale that's never been seen before. Massive. We've seen the actors walking on the outside of it in various episodes and movies but it's never looked this good. Except maybe the NX-01.

The official site for the new Star Trek movie has launched. It's still under construction, so there's nothing there. But check out that new Starfleet insignia. Nice.

AOL has the first image of the Enterprise under construction up on their Moviefone site. Be sure to check out the larger image. I'm getting more and more excited about this movie.

Trek To The Troops

Trek to the Troops, an organization that uses science fiction as a means to celebrate to the US Armed Forces, will be holding their 3rd Annual Meet-and-Greet on December 11th. Special guests at the event will include Tim Russ (VOY: Tuvok), Chase Masterson (DS9: Leeta), Natalija Nogulich (TNG: Adm. Nechayev) and Chris Doohan (son of James Doohan). Music will be performed by perennial Trek guest star Vaughn Armstrong’s Enterprise Blues Band. Organizers also promise "lovely models." The event will be held at the Bob Hope Hollywood USO at LAX in Los Angeles, California from 1pm to about 8pm. More information at the Trek to the Troops website.

Star Trek Movie News 14

The official teaser trailer for Star Trek won't be out until next month, but TrekMovie.com has their own up at that link. I just watched it and, I must say, they did a very good job. I actually got goosebumps watching it. I have never been so excited about a movie. It's killing me that I have to wait another year for it.

My Dream Room

JFXonline.com has the first pictures of Zachary Quinto in full Spock makeup on set of the new Trek movie. Now, if you're a Heroes fan, like I've become over the past month, you're just going to see Sylar dressed as Spock so hopefully he's been able to nail the voice and mannerisms of Nemoy or it might not work.

Star Trek Movie News 12

A site called JFX Online has the first photos from the set of Star Trek. They're all extras, no stars, and they're all in the parking lot covered with long blue coats to conceal what they're wearing. So we have no idea what their uniforms look like. Will they be the bright colored shirts and black pants from TOS or will they be something between them and the overalls worn by the cast in Enterprise? Don't know. What I would like to see is it start out with something in between then go to the classic TOS uniforms near the end of the picture.
