I guess I should throw my two cents into the debate. Now, I don't care that she talked about occupation. Blah, blah, blah, song and dance. Whatever. What I did have a problem with was her next comment about Jews going back to Poland and Germany. Yeah, because they had so much luck there the last time. That comment just smacks of "Jews go home". Is she an anti-Semite? I don't know. But according to Bob Beckel, while he doesn't agree with her comment, apparently being of Lebanese decent explains it somehow. I don't think he was trying to justify it, but I'm not sure where he was going with that.
And those calling for her to be fired need to just slow down a bit. In case you forgot, and how could you because you've been active with the Tea Party movement, we have this thing called the First Amendment that gives us the right to say stupid things. Now, if her employer deems her a liability then they have every right to let her go. But to demand that she be fired? No.

Helen Thomas apologized for her statement on Friday and she has now resigned. Her retirement is effective immediately.

Regarding your point about calls for her to be fired and the First Amendment – unless someone in the government was calling for her to be fired over this incident, this is not a First Amendment issue.
