Schwarzenegger Does Have Some Intelligence

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to veto a bill that would require California textbooks to contain information about the contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in American history. What a homophobe. According to Schwarzenegger's spokesman Adam Mendelsohn
The governor believes that school curriculum should include all important historical figures, regardless of orientation. However, he does not support the legislature micromanaging curriculum
Bingo.

Here's something that gets me. This bill would be for all school textbooks. Even kindergarten. So, if it were to pass, parents would be forced, by the government, to have their children immersed in something they may not want them to be learning about. If Liberals really believed in freedom of choice why don't they want parents to have that freedom? It's good to see Arnold has his head screwed on tight about this.
Story.

Because quite a lot of the time, Christian parents don't give their children freedom of choice.

It's their kid, they give them the rights they want them to have. If a parent doesn't want their 6 year old learning about homosexuality why should they be forced to?

Nothing like the idea that other ideas are bad for their kids. My kid... I want him to learn about everything. Obviously I would want him to know about homosexuality. One of the 30 kids in his class will be gay (statistically speaking). To not understand the background and culture of that person would be shutting the kid out.

Of course, I don't expect you would agree.

As far as "choice" and that bull.... Individual parents do not get to choose their textbooks. That is a community decision and it is made as a whole. We did a text book adoption 3 years ago here in Texas and all levels, Teachers, Parents, and Administration were involved in the decision making. But, obviously some didn't like the choice made. It is a democracy.

So, if a parent is morally opposed to homosexuality you think the government should be allowed to tell them that their views don't matter and how they want to raise their own child is irrelevant?

Personally, I think that if a parent is morally opposed to homosexuality, it doesn't matter since the kid has a mind of their own to make up.

Give them all the facts and let them sort out what they think - don't let the parents dictate the kid's thoughts.

I don't know how school grades go in Australia, but here in the states it goes Kindergarten(5-years-old) to 12th grade(18). So I'm going to use our grades.

Most children who're in Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd or 3rd grades aren't old enough to process something like that on their own. They rely on their parents for guidance. Now, whether you or I agree with the parents values is irrelevant, it's their kid. If they want them to grow up to despise the military or homosexuals, it's their choice. Neither you, I nor the government has a say in what parents want their children to grow up believing. If you had a son, would you want the government to require textbooks teaching him war is a good thing? I'm guessing you wouldn't.

I highly doubt it would be included in kindergarten textbooks. This is primarily because they don't teach history in kindergarten.

Or did you forget that? On the whole history in any real way, doesn't get taught until highschool (unless you think picture books somehow constitute textbooks?).

And no, if they want their children to grow up this way or that way, that's their choice. However, it's not their right. If the government decided to use textbooks that said war was good, I'd simply give him books that demonstrate the opposite and let him make up his own mind. Children aren't pets to be trained. They're people with brains of their own.

It's just the Left's slow brainwashing of America's youth. My English professor ,for example, promotes Al Gore's global warming propaganda film as if it's fact. When I challenged that, the teacher denied that there was any possibility that the film may not be 100% accurate, and then proceeded to call me a narrow-minded android (even though I have the best grade in the class).

California's academics arena is so far gone. I can't wait to get out this commie craphole.

And to Za's assumption, I'd like to see a study or evidence that proves Christian parents brainwash their kids. I was raised in a religious home and allowed to make up my own mind. Most of my close friends were raised in religious homes and some chose to be liberal, others independent, and some conservative, regardless of their parents' views.

Oh and Za, I was taught some history in Kindergarten (George Washington, Jefferson, our current president, etc). I don't know how I would have reacted to seeing gay or homosexual in there when I was five years old.

You need to stop making assumptions about a country you have demonstrated you know very little about.

In the majority of cases, children will grow up to believe what their parents believed - primarily because parents will bring their children along to whatever religious services they go to (just as a matter of looking after them), and will put them into whatever facilities they have there to look after the children.

Everyone can point to examples where that's not the case, but those are the exceptions, not the rule, and generally people can do that with anything. We're only separated by 7 people after all.

Did you use textbooks? Because if you look, the proposed law only applies to textbooks, not what is actually taught.

Have to learn to stick to the topic Deo, if you want to build a functioning argument. ;)
