Deo's made the best comparison for what's going on it New Orleans.

Rape, murder, stealing of watches and t.v.'s, beatings and shootings. People have revered down to primitive human behavior. It's sad what's going on and most in the media are excusing it because "they're the poorest of the poor and have lost everything". Now, admittedly, Americans can be assholes, but this is nothing more than animal behavior. Taking food, water and medicine is perfectly fine, but taking televisions and jewelry is inexcusable. Going into peoples homes, walking over their dead bodies, to take what you can is inexcusable. Gangs walking the streets beating and killing people is sick. It's scary watching people devolve like this.

Is For Good Men To Do Nothing

Anarchy is anarchy. That is just what we see there.

For once I agree with John.

When you have nothing, and you have to fulfill your needs and there's nothing to go around, this stuff happens no matter what country you come from.

Sorry Chris, but EVERYONE is that much of an arsehole. However, 1st worlders are more of that kind of an arsehole than 3rd worlders. They're used to higher standards, so they take more.

So true Za!

It's certainly embarrassing. Take away the law and order here, and it seems that we Americans as a whole are worse than the lawlessness we see in Iraq.

Not worse you guys..the same as. People are people no matter where you live or your ethnic background.
Maybe that is why some consider me anti-social. I have never really liked "people" as a whole. Becuase of peoples basic tendancies.

No, that's not true.
Psychologically speaking, if a person spends their entire life living in a specific type of environment, when their "normal" resource levels drop, they won't over-reach what they had before - they'll reach for what they're used to.

So in the Bangladeshi floods, people were looting, but individuals didn't take as much as they are in New Orleans. It's quite probable they took a bit more than they would normally have been used to, but this is for two reasons:
1) storing up,
2) comparitive luxury.

Storing up is a long-term survival mechanism. Comparitive luxury just means that they'd take a smidge more than they're used to so that way they can feel a bit better.

Overall, 1st worlders are more greedy than 3rd worlders. It's an equilibrium thing.

Kind of like the saying "The more you have, the more you want?"

Very close.

The more you lose, the more you want.

It's why 1st worlders get so maladjusted when going to a 3rd world nation.
